Reconstruction, Upcycling, Zero Waste
Redress Design Award Collection
Luyao’s Redress Design Award collection, ‘Endless Use’, draws inspiration from Chinese bamboo weaving and the traditional notion of making the most of materials. He reconstructs discarded denim clothing into zero-waste looks by cutting them into two-dimensional strips, sewing the edges, and weaving the pieces together. The designs include a top with wide sleeves and high-waist skirt, a coat highlighting body curves paired with a voluminous skirt, and a large, loose jumpsuit. Rounded shapes emphasise Luyao’s theme of allowing materials to be used endlessly, pointing towards circular design.
